Exhibitions:

Cupola has four gallery spaces, one of which is a dedicated temporary exhibition space. We hold approximately ten exhibitions per year. These are either solo or themed shows covering a large variety of styles and media. Work is selected via open submission and invitation which guarantees a regular influx of new work and artists to the gallery.

Please feel free to view archive photos of some of our previous exhibitions PLUS the current schedule of what is coming up.

'Delightfully Useless'

Solo Sculpture Exhibition by Nick Hunter

Exhibition Runs - Thursday 20th March - Saturday 19th April 2008

Open Evening - Thursday 20th March 7.30pm – 9.30pm

Delightfully Useless Nick Hunter continues to make marks and cut wood in the name of Art. Painstakingly painted carvings, painted found objects and carved recycled things. Some of you will be amused, a couple of you might be bored and one of you at least could achieve enlightenment by visiting this show.

“I started carving after seeing the work of New Zealand artist, Craig Orr. He carved little mythical animals and I realised then that you didn't have to carve realistic things. I've always liked making things'. I studied Fine Art Printmaking at college, rather than painting because it had a practical side to it. Someone bought me 4 chisels and a mallet for Christmas in 1984 and I was off!“

'Restless Nature'

Solo Painting/Photography Exhibition by Stephen Todd

Exhibition Runs - Friday 25th April - Saturday 24th May 2008

Open Evening - Friday 25th April 7.30pm – 9.30pm

Restless Nature

The Subject
Sea-lines. Shore to horizon. Always present, never the same.
Frames tidal force. Hypnotises the eye. Unties a narrowing mind.
This work dwells on the sea-lines of English seas. The start is the North Sea and estuary around Spurn Head, the English Channel and estuaries at Torbay, and the Bristol Channel. Places close to my life.

The Object
Since its invention the photograph has affected the course of painting. It has democratised the creation of images and become the recorder of time and place. For an artist interested in land and seascapes the boundary between painting and photography is vital to explore.
- What does the process of painting bring that the photograph cannot?
- What does the process of photography offer to painting?

The Work
After initial decisions about the materials and the start point, I paint with a mind interrupted by ideas, sentences and words. These interruptions often get included in the work and move a painting away from its initial point of reference.

The Influence
The apocalyptic nature of JMW Turner’s oil and watercolour seascapes and the rhythmic sea and landscapes of Eric Ravilious’ watercolours make me want, all the more, to be an English painter.
