An MA Hons graduate of Oxford University, Sarah worked in language education for a number of years, teaching in Australia, Indonesia and Pakistan as well as in the UK.  In 2006 she re-located with her partner to China, during which time she studied and worked as a fine artist in both traditional and digital media.  She immediately began receiving commissions, and in 2008 produced a series of digital art prints for the University of Nottingham Ningbo.

Since then she has worked as a free-lance materials developer and illustrator, contributing to a number of educational projects in the UK and overseas.  During this time she also met and collaborated with San Naing, artist and owner of Ngapali Gallery, Myanmar. The oil painting ‘Lelah by the Sea’ is based on one of his sketches.

She has recently begun painting full-time, now focusing primarily on oil painting.

Sarah Payne

Painter.

Artist Statement:

Influenced by early Buddhist and Byzantine painting styles, also by screen print and manga, I use distilled form and gesture to describe moments of ambiguity, epiphany or grace.

The style is highly figurative, with simple compositions, complex textures and strong, clean lines.

In keeping with the iconographic tradition, flow of line and harmony of composition are key.

Using mainly wood panel supports and a flexible alkyd-based medium I paint in broken layers, sometimes cutting stencils and printing out the shapes.

The flattened perspectives and fragmented paint surfaces are reminiscent of screen print or fresco, while the layering of colour creates movement and depth within the stillness of form.

I use a minimalist palette of only artist-grade paints.
