Hilary Simms

Artist Statement
In Japanese Raku means "enjoyment , comfort or ease". The wood firing technique of Raku was created in Japan in the 16th century and originally
used for decorating tea bowls. It is the unpredictable nature of Raku that gives Hilary'spieces their organic nature. She can create definite lines to enhance movement in the form but all other marks are made by chance.

"A trip to The Gambia provided the inspiration for my Nautilus collection.  Shells and bones were collected on a deserted beach and these natural forms influenced my current work. The naked Raku finish brings the forms to life." Hilary Simms
